INSTITUTE OF CULTURE, YUCATAN

GENERAL LITERATURE SUBDIRECTORATE

OPERATIONAL COORDINATION reading rooms

The National Reading Room was created in 1995, with the participation of two states of Mexico, now all of the entities of the country, covering most of our national territory and various cities in United States North America.

This nationwide program involving the National Council for Culture and the Arts, the Ministries of Education and Culture, Local Councils and Institutes of Culture in Mexico, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and volunteers, convinced the importance of educating readers in your community.

The State of Yucatan, is part of the program since 2003, participating in the Institute of Culture of Yucatan through the General Department of Literature, along with the General Directorate of Publications CONACULTA, who coordinate the implementation of this program.

The "Towards a nation of readers" is the joint efforts of the Government of the Republic to incorporate reading into the lives of all Mexicans, having as one of the objectives set for reading and the book as essential elements for the formation of the population, for personal growth, their approach to expressions of culture and the formation of a critical consciousness.

The purpose is to create reading rooms across the country and in communities of Mexicans living outside the national territory, in which foster the taste for reading, especially among young people and adults, but also has a particular focus on children. In the case of Yucatan, where approximately 60% of the laboratories are doing activities to them.

The Reading Rooms are spaces equipped with books varied, attractive and quality, in which a group of people, coordinated by a trained advocate, read, comment and make reading-related activities also that are home loan of books; this loan, in particular, in some municipalities and police stations in Yucatán has been a success, that because the reading rooms have become the only access people have to borrow books because they lack public libraries.

The loan of books at home, is free and allows you to continue and extend the benefits of the Reading Room to the families of the participants. On average the 145 reading rooms for loans is 6 books per session.

The Reading Room sessions are held weekly (with a minimum of two continuous hours) in which they carry out various activities, and all manner Free.

The collection is provided by the organizing institutions. And it contains a number of books selected to suit different reading interests of participants may have.

14500 In the state there are books that make up the total stock of 145 reading rooms, they were sent by the Department of Publications adding to these 500 titles that the Department of Literature Publishing and Promotion Institute of Culture of Yucatan, donated to increase the stock of rooms.

This increase in collections requires initiative and the contributions of the participants to enrich other books and material of the stock of each room. And as the work progresses rooms can evaluate the possibility of granting more titles to increase the stock of the room and reach more audience.

The Coordinator of the Board designed a system of activities to promote reading in a space accessible to the participants. Provides the service for free, continuous, facilitates home loan of books and orders the collection and management in the manner that best suits you. Besides creating awareness in the group to go to libraries, book fairs and libraries to increase the options of reading.

One feature of the program is its accessibility to those who decide to open one. The training by the CONACULTA

with the Institute of Culture, is free and constant so that its application becomes feasible even for those without greater resources and decide to install a room reading in public or private gratita always so. Room Coordinator must be a person to read and show interest in formation readers as well as commitment and a real chance to install can be a parent, a teacher, a librarian, a coworker, student, writer, publisher or bookseller, cultural promoters, workshop in the field of letters , among others.

From 2003 to implement the program so far have been conducted ten training courses Coordinators reading rooms (Module I), five of updates (Module II), and there have been three State Coordinators meetings to exchange experiences and learn about the scope and expectations are to improve all actions Coordination have a good program to disseminate and consolidate the community's approach to books and reading. Logically average attendance per room is 34 people, but

must take into account that most of the wards of the state are directed at children, is there room which have the largest number of participants, so these rooms meet and even exceed the average, but this average does not apply in rooms aimed at adults or the elderly, since according to the latest assessments averaged 10 to 25 people per room.

Among the reading rooms of the Yucatan, there is a specialist in people with visual deficiency, also in Social Rehabilitation Center for Women, "El Cerezo" where there is also a Creative Writing Workshop and The School for Young Offenders.

Reading Room Reading Room Paulo Freire

Pongo at your disposal the Virtual Reading Room where you can call Paulo Freire consult or borrow the materials. The location of the Reading Room is the historic center of Merida Yucatan, Mexico. And you can write to email: chambrita@mail.com

Freire's thinking, set around a Christian humanist vision in Latin America, manifested through the so-called 'liberation theology' focuses on the field of education. Pedagogy appears as needed basis and impetus for the awareness that leads to development, human progress, liberation of the individual from the bonds that keep you away from your real social dimension. However, Freire identifies and encourages the movement of communication for development, the use of media such as radio in areas of difficult schooling etc. For Freire, the media are a cultural instrument of the first magnitude to break the delay of broad social layers, to return the word to the ignorant, which is the negation of freedom of expression and the origin of the 'culture of silence'. The existence of the human being exists only in dialogue, communication.

Born in northwest Brazil, where half of its 30 million people lived within a culture of silence (marginalization and illiteracy), it was necessary to 'give voice' to gain citizenship status that would overcome colonialism. His analysis of the psychology of oppression were greatly influenced by the major theorists of psychoanalysis, Freud , Jung and Adler , and also critical thinking Fanon and Fromm . Also connect with the leading figures of European and American critical thinking, among them Gramsci and Habermas .
Paulo Freire is considered the architect of the current Latin American education and communication for educational communication.
